2008-03-12. My butterfly amaryllis finally rebloomed. It's been a long, long wait.
One of the many projects on my growing to do list is to remove the grass that is growing right up to the trunks of my trees. The trees are all mature so the grass itself does not create any problems for the trees, they have all learned to get along well when it comes to getting nutrients and water. So, it is actually just an aesthetic thing for me. In the backyard, there is a peach tree, a pear tree, a cherry tree, and an apple tree. I also have a plum tree, but it is in a raised bed without any grass around it. However, I also plant vegetables there and am using that same bed as a nursery of sorts for a couple of Lilac bushes that will be transplanted in the near future. In the front yard, there is a Dogwood tree, variety unknown since it was here when we moved here, and a Catalpa tree. I am fortunate in that none of these trees have surface roots. You know, the ones you trip over whenever walking near them? read more »
A quick post today.I have been working a lot of shifts so my gardening has been limited. The dark closes in early now and the sun comes up later.

The bulb for this amaryllis was given to me by a student family in early December as a Christmas gift. I followed the instructions carefully, but for months it just wouldn't grow beyond the few initial spikes of leaves. I thought perhaps I had over-watered it initially, or hadn't watered it enough. Maybe it was too cold in the indoor garden room. I felt like Charlie Brown and his little Christmas tree: "I've killed it.". . . reBlogged to amaryllis...Old Roseshttp://agardeningyear.blogspot.com/

The Autumn Flower show signals the end of the British Summer. The usual plant nurserys and growers had set up their displays for the last time this year. It is a profusion of colours, scents, and flowers. I was restrained in only taking fifty photos, but nights before i went did not help. The first photo is of a gorgeous two tone Carnation, almost like a tudor rose. The floral exhibits had people growing various flowers for display and judging. Row upon row of tables covered in Carnations, Dahlias, Chysanthenums,Roses, and Fuschias. read more »

I love having enough amaryllis to pick bunches for the house. This red one is one of two varieties that have gone native in our suburb. They are in essentially every garden. These I picked from in front of a camellia in front and they need to be moved. They don’t show up against the [...]
